For me, community represents a way to build empathy and concern for, and interest in, the people I live near. When I hear about segments of our society who wish to deny others, I think if they only took the time to get to know each other, they would realize we all seek the same things - happiness, freedom, security, love. People fear what they don't understand, but by fostering community we allay those fears and build compassion for our fellow humans. When you share a tool with someone, or feed them in your home, you form a connection with them. Their well-being is connected to your own. When you walk down the street and you see someone you know, you greet each other and are aware of a support system nearby. Even if we don't agree with each other's opinions/viewpoints, we are linked on the most basic level - we share a community and we all work together to keep it healthy.
